  • Finding Peace by the Water: Prayer, Meditation, and Scripture

Take a moment to breathe, pray, and let the sound of the water wash away the noise of the day.

There is something special about sitting beside a flowing creek. The sound of moving water has a way of slowing our thoughts, calming our worries, and helping us focus on God. Whether it’s a mountain stream, a quiet creek, or the gentle flow of a river, water reminds us of God’s provision, His peace, and the life He freely gives.

Many people use nature sounds for relaxation and meditation. As Christians, we can go a step further and use these quiet moments to pray, reflect on Scripture, and draw closer to God.

    Be Still and Know

One of the most well-known verses about finding peace is Psalm 46:10:

«”Be still, and know that I am God.”»

When we sit beside flowing water, we are reminded that God is in control. The creek does not rush. It simply follows the path God has created for it. In the same way, we can trust God to guide our lives one step at a time.Living Water

Jesus used water as a picture of spiritual life:

“Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.” — John 4:14

As you listen to the sound of flowing water, consider what it means to receive the living water that Christ offers. Physical water sustains the body, but Jesus sustains the soul.

    A Simple Creekside Prayer

    Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the beauty of Your creation. Thank You for the sound of flowing water and the peace it brings. Help me to quiet my heart before You. Wash away my worries, fears, and distractions. Fill me with Your peace and remind me that You are always near.

Guide my thoughts toward what is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and admirable. Help me trust You with the things I cannot control. May Your Holy Spirit refresh my soul as this creek refreshes the land around it.

    In Jesus’ name,
    Amen.

    Meditating on God’s Word

As you listen to the water, slowly read and reflect on these verses:

    – Psalm 23:1-3
    – Isaiah 26:3
    – Matthew 11:28-30
    – Philippians 4:6-8
    – John 7:37-38

Read each verse slowly. Pause. Listen to the water. Pray. Then read the verse again.

Creation Points Us to the Creator

Nature is not something we worship, but it is something that points us to the One who created it. The beauty of a flowing creek reminds us that God is still at work in the world and in our lives.

The next time you find yourself beside a stream, take a few moments to be still, pray, and listen. Let the sound of the water remind you of God’s faithfulness, His peace, and His promise of living water through Jesus Christ.

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.” — John 14:27

McMahon Creek flowing through Big Slackwater along the historic C&O Canal. A peaceful reminder that creation never stops praising its Creator.
  • Easy Homemade Kefir From Store-Bought Kefir

If you’ve never made kefir before, this is probably the easiest way to start. No kefir grains, no fancy equipment, and no expensive starter kits. We used plain store-bought kefir from Aldi and turned a half gallon of milk into homemade kefir right on the kitchen counter. This method worked surprisingly well and cost only a few dollars.

    What We Used

    1/2 gallon whole milk

    1 cup unsweetened plain kefir

    Clean milk jug

    Thermometer (optional)

    We used:

Friendly Farms Whole Milk from Aldi

Friendly Farms Unsweetened Kefir from Aldi

    The Process

    We started on:

Sunday, May 31 at 8:30 PM The house temperature was: 76.6°F

    Steps

    1. Open the half gallon of milk.
    2. Remove about 1 cup of milk.
    3. Shake kefir well.
    4. Add 1 cup of plain unsweetened kefir.
    5. Put the lid back on and gently shake.
    6. Leave the jug out at room temperature.
    7. Check the taste periodically and gently shake once or twice a day.
    8. When it becomes tangy and slightly thickened, refrigerate and enjoy.

    We let it ferment until:

Tuesday, June 2 at 5:30 PM

That’s about 45 hours total fermentation time.

    The Result

By the end, the milk had thickened into kefir with a tangy flavor and cultured smell. The live bacteria from the store-bought kefir successfully fermented the milk. Now we have nearly a full half gallon of homemade kefir for a fraction of the price of buying individual bottles.

    A Few Notes

Use plain unsweetened kefir with live cultures.

Whole milk makes a thicker kefir.

    Keep everything reasonably clean.

Fermentation time changes with room temperature.

Refrigerate once it reaches the flavor and thickness you like.

    Is This Traditional Kefir?

    Not exactly.

Traditional kefir is usually made with kefir grains, which are a living colony of bacteria and yeast. This method is more like a “backslopped cultured milk,” similar to how yogurt starters are reused.

But for a simple homemade probiotic drink, it works great.

    Final Thoughts

Sometimes old-fashioned kitchen experiments are the best ones. A jug of milk, a little patience, and a cup of kefir turned into a whole new batch sitting right on the counter.
If you already buy kefir, this is an easy way to stretch your grocery budget and keep probiotics in the fridge.
